I haven’t watched movies for the past two months for some reasons, until today.
I was just actually first caught by the song, Ordinary Human by OneRepublic, and I found out that it’s the OST of the movie, The Giver. So, I immediately watched it after knowing so.
Today I felt a switch in my vein
Today I made them all afraid
Used to be a shadow
Now a shadow scream my name
And in the daylight I could swear
We’re the same
But I’m just an ordinary human
The movie is actually a social science fiction (wiki) or a sci-fi one, which is my interest. However, it talks about the past, the present, the future, and LOVE.
It’s about Jonas who lives in a futuristic black and white, rather colorless, emotion-less, at peace, no pain and no suffering world, where he happens to become the memory receiver or simply, The Receiver. He then meets The Giver, who will turn over all the memories of the past to him. Then, Jonas receives it all. He knows now that there is color, music, ‘the hippo which is actually an elephant’, music, dance, emotion, dream, LOVE, and WAR. He then wants to get back all of those memories even it has to mean breaking all the rules he has lived by, and to become an ORDINARY HUMAN again.
There are just some lines that I can remember.
“From suffering there is pain.” – Chief Elder, Meryl Streep
“Memories are not just about the past. It determines our future.” – The Giver, Jeff Bridges
“A dream is a combination of reality, fantasy, emotion, and what you had for dinner.” – The Giver, Jeff Bridges
“If you don’t feel, what’s the point?” – The Receiver, Brenton Thwaites.
Moreover, here is a fan-made lyric video I found in Youtube. I think the song is actually made for Jonas’ character. 🙂
