It has been almost a year now after I left my first job, my first love (in terms of job, yes). For almost four years I used to seeing my name crawl over the closing billboard of the TV program where I was a staff, from being a Program Researcher to being a Segment Producer. And for every journalist, it is our glory to at least read our precious names to whatever craft we make; be it on TV, newspaper, magazine, online media, etc.
I have been a freelancer since then. I accepted whatever little opportunity to earn a living. Isang kahig, isang tuka ika nga. But I tried to enjoy it as long as I gain new knowledge and experience out of it. One evening, a college close friend called me to write a food story for the travel magazine where she is the Editorial Assistant. I realized after the call that I have never written an article (for publication) after I graduated from college five years ago so I accepted it right away. I have a bachelor’s degree in Journalism but I have never seen yet my name written on the byline of any published article or of any of that sort.
“Whoa! This is gonna be the first!”, I thought.
As a segment producer I was assigned mostly to food stories so I thought it would be easy to write a feature on Bicolano food and delicacies. But on the process of writing I experienced some writer’s block and ran out of words and I adjusted a bit since I used to write scripts in Tagalog. However, since I got the passion to write about our, Bicolanos’, own food it was a natural flow in my mind and tongue as I tap the keyboard on the laptop I was using that I finished it right away. Lalo na nagmamadali na ‘yong magaling na kaibigan kong editor. (Laughs)
